Project 6 Exercise 3 Portrait from memory/imagination

For this exercise I decided to use as my inspiration the person who is referred to as Boudica. According to historical evidence she was a tall woman with masses of red hair and piercing eyes. I’m sure she must have been formidable in battle to have been able to rouse all those warrior people behind her. However she was also a mother who suffered immeasurable anguish at a pivotal time in her life. I tried to show this wrought, almost fragile but still fiercely uncompromising version of her.

Boudica of the Iceni

I used water-soluble oil pastels, inks, pencils and sepia PITT marker pens in my A3 sketchbook.
